Our pastor recently asked what events in your life made you feel the closest to God? He shared about the time when he took a group of kids (he was a principle at a Christian school prior to becoming a pastor) to Washington DC and things didn’t go very well one of the nights. Everyone hopped on the bus to go back to the hotel and it was totally quiet most of the way. Then, one of the students started singing praise songs. Everyone else quickly joined him. Pastor Dave said that he will never forget that night because it was the best time of worship he’s ever experienced. He felt so close to God. His story made me think about my trip to Innsbruck, Austria twelve years ago. We were on a Trafalgar tour with about thirty other tourists from all over the world. Well, one evening, we were on a horse carriage ride through the most gorgeous country side. The sun was just going down and the atmosphere was magical. I was in awe of God’s creation and I think everyone else was too because we were quiet most of the ride. Then, without much thinking, my friend and I started singing Amazing Grace. After we were finished, two couples from South Africa sang Amazing Grace in Swazi. We must have had at least three or four groups sing the same song. His grace is amazing. Here’s the lyrics to the song!
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
